One of Wyndham’s worst crash blackspots will be removed, with the state government to spend $1.6 million improving the Old Geelong Road-Forsyth Road intersection at Williams Landing.
The funding will be used to realign the road to reduce the curve as it meets Forsyth Road, to install new signs, remove trees and relocate street lights to improve visibility.
Since 2007, the road has been the site of six run-off-road crashes and one fatality, prompting the government to spend $880,000 in 2012 to install traffic lights at the intersection with Forsyth Road.
Businesses and Truganina South Primary School have been calling for the intersection to be made safer, warning the number of accidents is on the rise.
Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the project would provide extra protection for pedestrians and motorists.
The upgrade to Old Geelong Road follows an announcement by the federal government that it will spend $345,000 to improve blackspots in Werribee and Little River.
Infrastructure and Regional Develop- ment Assistant Minister Jamie Briggs said $315,000 would be spent installing guardrails at Sandy Creek Road, south of Little River-Ripley Road.
The remaining $40,000 will be spent on warning lights in Cottrell Street, at Market Road, to remind motorists to give way to pedestrians.
