Mental Health Week: New Wyndham youth support program helps remove stigma

A NEW support program for Wyndham young people will be launched as part of this week’s Mental Health Week.

According to the national youth mental health foundation, headspace, only one in four young Australians with a mental illness seeks professional help.

With early intervention critical, the Western Region Health Centre is starting a program for people aged 16-24 at the Wyndham Youth Resource Centre in Hoppers Crossing.

Chief executive Lyn Morgain said the program would offer home-based support, supported accommodation and a group for those hearing voices.

“The program aims to support young people with specific mental health concerns to engage with education, employment services, and develop life skills which may include re-engagement with their family and the community,” she said.

“Mental Health Week is all about raising awareness of mental health and well-being, reducing stigma, and supporting those with a mental illness and their carers.

“The prevalence of people experiencing high and very high levels of psychological distress in the west is generally higher than the state average.

“Support for people experiencing mental illness is vital for recovery and keeping people out of hospital.’’

Ms Morgain said that talking openly and honestly about mental illness was the only way to reduce the stigma.

“We know young people want services which specifically address their needs. Our programs try to engage with them on all levels from mental health to sexual health and drug and alcohol education.’’
