Werribee will not surrender

Where there’s life, there’s hope for Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.

The Tigers are still in the east-west first XI finals conversation after Saturday’s gutsy three-wicket win over Box Hill at Chirnside Park.

It was a do-or-die contest for both sides and there was no quarter given.

The pendulum swung throughout a tense second day, but Werribee found a way to get over the line, passing Box Hill’s 206 in 62.3 overs.

It was a solid, all-round team effort in the run chase for the Tigers, with Adam Alifraco (19), Sean Dean (37), Matt Dean (28), Tim O’Brien (29) and Darcy Phillips (24) playing their part.

But James Freeman was the stand-out, hitting 51 to go with 2-22.

Werribee has won its past two games, but must keep winning to stay in the finals race.

The Tigers face a two-day bout with Altona starting on Saturday at the Frank Kirk Oval.

Hoppers Crossing has picked up its third win of the summer, devouring Endeavour Hills by 187 runs at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. Cats off-spinner Hendro Dias proved nigh on unplayable en route to stunning figures of 6-11 off 11 overs.

The Cats will play their last home game for the season against Mount Waverley in a two-dayer starting on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Shahbaz Anwar has been the talk of VTCA club Bellbridge in the past week.

Anwar achieved a rare feat by taking a double hat-trick in a second XI game against Williamstown Colts.

Prior to that, Anwar had not even taken four wickets in an innings this summer, but managed four scalps in four balls and eight for the match to be the toast of his teammates.
