Soccer wrap: Mixed fortunes for Wyndham clubs

Werribee City has cut its ties with senior coach Nino Ragusa.

The Bees parted company with Ragusa last week after the NPLV team had under-performed over the previous month.

Under Ragusa’s watch, the Bees had gone pointless in their previous five matches, tumbling to third-last on the ladder and in danger of slipping into the automatic relegation zone.

The change didn’t give the Bees the shot in the arm they were looking for as they lost 4-0 to Pascoe Vale at CB Smith Reserve on Friday night.

The Bees have a crucial week in their season with three games in six days.

They resume their survival push against Port Melbourne Sharks at home at Galvin Park on Sunday, then travel to Hume City for a Wednesday night fixture, followed by a trip to Avondale on Saturday week.

Hoppers Crossing remains top of table

In state league 3 north-west, Hoppers Crossing guarded its seven-point lead at the top of the table with a solid 2-0 road win over Lalor United at Uren Reserve.

Striker Liam McDermott, the team’s leading goalscorer with eight, and winger Zia Sherzai, found the back of the net for the Reds.

The Reds will pay a visit to bottom side Brunswick Zebras on Saturday.

Point Cook and Truganina struggle

In state league 4 west, Point Cook’s title ambitions hit another hurdle with a disappointing 3-1 home loss to Surf Coast, which saw them drop to third in the standings.

Truganina Hornets lost 2-1 to ladder-leader Maribyrnong Greens in a competitive match at Arndell Park.

The relegation-threatened Hornets are hovering just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
