An upcoming cricket tournament aims to raise awareness and funds for young people in Wyndham who don’t have a place to call home.

Seven teams will take to the cricket pitch this weekend as part of the Wyndham Homelessness project – a year-long campaign between Whitelion and Let’s Feed, which aims to raise $100,000 to tackle youth homelessness by the end of the year.

Charity groups Soni Dharti and Melbourne Service Club are also involved in the fundraiser.

Whitelion program manager Charlotte Kelberg said all funds raised would go towards helping high-risk young people who have unstable housing situations.

Let’s Feed founder Jasvinder Sidhu said, as well as raising money, the tournament would create awareness about youth homelessness.

“There are many people in the community who don’t realise that youth homelessness actually exists,” Mr Sidhu said.

Ms Kelberg agreed: “We find ourselves spending time convincing people that homelessness is actually real, instead of telling them how they can help. Awareness is very important,” she said.

The $100,000 campaign will focus on providing short-term local accommodation for young people who are at risk of being homeless.

It will also go to street outreach, case management and community engagement programs.

The cricket tournament will take place on August 20 at Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook.
