Young voices have their say

There was a very special TedX talk in Tarneit on Wednesday 15 October, as students from three schools used their minds and voices to discuss tomorrow.

Hosted by Barayip Primary School in conjunction with WImba Primary School and Wareen Primary School, 16 students from years four to six led presentations on important issues at TedX TarneitYouth.

From bullying and racism to immigration, environmental awareness, mental health and more – these young speakers captivated the audience, showing that courage and vision comes in every age bracket.

The occasion was organised under the globally recognised TEDx license, and showcased the power of community-driven ideas that are worth sharing, discussing and pondering.

Several distinguished guests attended including federal Lalor MP Joanna Ryan, school improvement leaders from the Department of Education, principals, teachers, families, and other students.

The successful coordination of TEDx TarneitYouth was carried out by Barayip principal Nicole O’Brien, Wimba principal Paul Schwartz and Wareen principal Joanna Stanford.

Ms O’Brien said the event was an inspirational display of how young people can generate ideas, talk about them and make a profound impact on their peers and the rest of the community.

“As the event came to a close amid thunderous applause and smiling faces, one thing shone brighter than ever,” she said.

“The future is here, loud, proud and ready to lead — and we are all invited to celebrate their journey.”

Ms O’Brien also said that the student leaders from the three schools were pivotal in coordinating the ceremony, and that it will be remembered fondly.
