To mark the beginning of this year’s National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee week, an event was held at the Wyndham Civic Centre to encourage residents in the municipality to follow theme and get up, stand up and show up.

Cr Jennie Barrera addressed the large crowd by first acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first custodians of the land.

“In the spirit of reconciliation, we need to build a strong connection between local first people and local government so that we can walk together for a better future,” she said.

“NAIDOC week has a long history and it’s celebrated annually and recognises, as it should, the history, culture and the many and varied achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to our community.”

A flag raising ceremony was also held and a performance by local First Nations artist and award-winning musician, Jessie Lloyd, for members of the community to enjoy.
