Karen Davies credits the connections she has made through the Wyndham Business Awards with helping to build her veterinary clinic at Point Cook.

Direct Vet Services won the 2012 ‘new and emerging business award’ in recognition of the hard work by Dr Davies and her staff after the clinic opened its doors in November, 2010.

The clinic has entered this year’s awards, which will be announced on August 28.

“A lot of new businesses struggle to get off the ground,” Dr Davies said.

“But when you get in among a group of like-minded people, like at the business awards, you can boost your skills set and bounce ideas off them.”

The Wallace Avenue clinic is a family business run by locals that also provides five veterinary nurses with a year-long placement while they study.

Dr Davies said being from the area helped her better understand the needs of her clients.

“Being a local, I understand the demographic of my clients and their financial situations,” she said. “I know their limits and budgets.”

The awards are open to registered businesses in Wyndham in the categories of tourism and hospitality, franchise, home-based, manufacturing, not-for-profit, retail, service, new and emerging, and transport and storage.

Awards will also be presented to the business of the year and the business person of the year. Entries close on June 26.
