The “normal blokes” of Wyndham are being encouraged to participate in an initiative that aims to support men’s physical, social and mental health.

Local resident Craig Emery is bringing The Man Walk to Werribee this weekend, depending on pandemic restrictions.

The Man Walk started in 2018 in Kiama, New South Wales and has grown into an international movement, giving men aged 16 and over an opportunity to walk and talk in a positive and inclusive environment.

Mr Emery said he first came across The Man Walk after seeing a social media post about a Geelong walk.

“I was intrigued about what it actually was and did some research around the concept and thought it would be a great initiative to introduce to the local community,” he said.

The first Werribee walk will take place on Saturday at 7.30am, starting and ending at Notorious Espresso in Watton Street. The walk will take in Wyndham Park and Chirnside Park.

“It will be great to get the initiative of the ground – everything has to start from somewhere, even if it is just a couple of walkers that will be great,” Mr Emery said.

He said that Man Walk participants did not have to discuss deep topics if they felt reluctant to.

“Any way that allows men to feel comfortable, in an environment to chat, is what appeals about the walk – there is no pressure to turn up, no pressure to talk about anything, just an opportunity if they wish to take it,” he said.

Mr Emery thanked Notorious Espresso owner Hadi Chami for providing the café as the start and endpoint for the walk.
