The Salvation Army thrift shop in Werribee has a new look and is looking for volunteers.

Store manager Tom Jeffrey said the Synnot Street shop had been revamped and organised into sections, such as bric-a-brac, clothing and entertainment, to make it easier for customers to navigate.

Now they’re in need of more volunteers, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mr Jeffrey said anyone wishing to volunteer could visit the store to chat with him, and later undergo the required checks and orientation.

He said volunteering in the shop was a good way to get gain experience in retail.

Debra Synnott, a team leader at the store, said she has been volunteering there for 10 years.

“It’s just good to meet the people, it’s just good work,” she said. “Many customers come in and say, ‘Hi,’ and have a chat.”

Captain Kim Haworth, from the Wyndham City Salvation Army Corps, said profits from the thrift shop went towards running community programs.

“Areas covered include working with youth, providing food and support to vulnerable people, and providing hot showers, clothes washing facilities, meals and other assistance as required,” she said.
