Ceramics teacher and artist Melissa Murphy-Vella says she is on a mission to raise the profile of the art form in Wyndham.

Also a sculptor, musician and photographer, Ms Murphy-Vella teaches ceramics classes at the Wyndham Park Community Centre’s Community Shed, which has a purpose-built studio, and the Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre.

After completing a degree in fine arts (ceramics) at the Victorian College of the Arts and studying education at the University of Melbourne, she has also been teaching visual arts, design and media studies in schools for 20 years

As well, Ms Murphy-Vella has created permanent public artworks, participated in Wyndham council exhibitions and been an artist in residence at schools.

Ms Murphy-Vella said her interest in ceramics developed at a young age, thanks to mother was taking classes in the art and an encouraging high school art teacher.

“The beauty of ceramics is that there are so many aspects involved,” she said.

“Whether it be hand building, throwing on the wheel, slip casting, surface design or glaze chemistry, it is truly limitless.

“One of the biggest highlights of teaching ceramics and art would have to be meeting so many amazing people over the years, fellow artists, teachers and students of all ages, even as young as two years old, which is an absolute delight.

“My aim is to support and guide students, giving them the confidence and flexibility to embark on their very own personal journey with clay.”
