Six pupils from Werribee Primary School are celebrating after winning a top tech award.

The youngsters – from the school’s robotics team, the Watt Wasps – competed in the Werribee Regional FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament last month.

They received two gongs, The Robot Design Award and The Robot Performance Award.

The school’s leading teacher of ICT, Nathan Cuthbertson, said the pupils spent months preparing for the competition, including sessions on Google Meet and learning remote coding over Webex.

“They worked so well together as a team and they are such a lovely group of students to work with,” Mr Cuthbertson said.

For the event, the pupils remotely coded a robot located on a table, considering what actions would achieve the most points in competition segments lasting 2.5 minutes.

Mr Cuthbertson other children at the school were rapt upon hearing about the Watt Wasps’ success.

“The cheers just about blew me out of the classroom,” he said.

The Watt Wasps have progressed to the LEGO tournament’s National Championships – South round, where they will compete against other teams from Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, on Sunday.
