Residents drive carpark plan

Parking at Williams Landing train station is a long-running issue.

A resident’s association has launched a petition calling on Wyndham council to provide more carparks in Williams Landing.

The president of the Williams Landing Estate Residents Association (WLERA), Ian MacGowan, said the group was lobbying the council to buy land for a long-stay carpark in the town centre.

Mr MacGowan said a long-stay park was needed to accommodate the thousands of new workers expected with the opening of major businesses in the area, such as Target.

He said developer Cedar Woods estimated that between 13,000 to 21,000 people would be working in Williams Landing during the next few years.

“There will be thousands of workers and our concern is, where will they park?” Mr MacGowan said

He said the WLERA wants the council to take action sooner rather than later, because the Williams Landing town centre was listed as a Priority Development Zone in the Wyndham Planning Scheme.

The scheme specifies that offices only need to provide three car spaces per 100 square metres of office space.

Mr MacGowan said this would not be enough parks. And although there were 150 parking spaces being built at the Williams Landing station, these would not even be enough for commuters.

“The current train station is about 500 spaces, and they’re full by 7am,” he said.

Wyndham council does not comment on petitions until they are presented to the council.

Copies of the petition are at Pinnacle Medical, SVS Global Groceries and the Williams Landing Newsagency.
