Push for Sayers Road fix

A Point Cook resident is pushing for one of Truganina’s busiest arterials to be duplicated.

Claudia Slusarczyk says she wastes two hours on average each day to get her daughter to and from Westbourne Grammar School and believes the section of Sayers Road between Derrimut and Palmers Road should be expanded from two lanes to four.

Ms Slusarczyk said she was shocked when she recently called VicRoads, which is responsible for the road, and was told no works were scheduled to duplicate the arterial.

Following that, she started up the Fix Sayers Road Truganina Facebook group and is meeting with Liberal candidate for the seat of Tarneit, Glenn Goodfellow, to advocate for action.

Ms Slusarczyk said it beggared belief that the stretch of Sayers Road was overlooked when it catered for two schools – Westbourne Grammar School and Al-Taqwa College – and a burgeoning population.

Wyndham council mayor and transport portfolio holder Henry Barlow backed Ms Slusarczyk’s calls.

“As part of our Get Wyndham Moving campaign from 2014 to 2016 we encouraged residents to write a letter directly to the relevant Victorian government ministers to highlight the need for Sayers Road to be duplicated,” Cr Barlow said.

“Roughly 22,000 vehicles have been using Sayers Road between Derrimut Road and Palmers Road for the past five years. A two-lane road is considered to be operating above capacity when it is carrying 18,000 vehicles per day.

“Sayers Road between Morris Road and Palmers Road reached capacity in 2003.”

VicRoads project director Frank De Santis did not answer specific questions about duplicating Sayers Road and traffic volumes, but said a $1.8 billion state government package to duplicate eight Wyndham arterial roads would have flow-on benefits for Sayers Road traffic.
