A Point Cook resident is petitioning Wyndham council for a pop-up park.

In her budget presentation to Wyndham council last week, Point Cook resident Susan McIntyre called on the council to put aside $50,000 to set up a temporary pop-up park at the Point Cook Town Centre.

In particular, Ms McIntyre is keen for the council to run the temporary installation over Christmas and summer, at the restaurant end of Murnong Street.

The idea is inspired by a pop-up park in Ballarat Street, Yarraville, that features synthetic turf, deck chairs and tables, which was introduced as a temporary park in 2011 and became a permanent feature in 2014.

“I believe it would support local businesses, improve community engagement and improve the ambience of the area,” she said.

“I can see young people listening to book readings, Santa spreading Christmas cheer, young people demonstrating their amazing musical abilities, community groups showcasing their talents and different cultural groups showing their culture.”

Ms McIntyre said a pop-up park would give the Point Cook Town Centre a point of difference.

Stockland Point Cook centre manager Frank Pizi said the shopping centre was always looking for new ideas.

“We welcome the idea for additional outdoor and pop-up experiences and we encourage community organisations and council to get in contact with their suggestions on how we can collaborate and activate the town square,” Mr Pizi said.

Wyndham council will consider budget submissions and adopt its 2017-18 budget at a council meeting on June 27.
