Tarneit has experienced the largest population growth in Wyndham across a five-year period, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The ABS last month released its annual regional population report, comparing the populations of various areas across the nation between June 30, 2014 and June 30, 2019.

Wyndham’s population grew from 201,512 residents in 2014 to 270,487 residents in 2019.

Out of the 270,487 residents, 46,707 lived in Tarneit, up from 31,424 in June 2014.

Point Cook was home to 42,900 people and Hoppers Crossing was home to 40,943 people.

Werribee was home to 37,334 residents, Truganina 33,144 residents and Wyndham Vale 29,215 residents.

Werribee South recorded 14,162 residents and Laverton 11,577 residents (the ABS classified Laverton as being in Wyndham, not split between Wyndham and Hobsons Bay).

According to the ABS report, Melbourne’s population reached more than 5.08 million by June 30 last year.

The median age of wider Melbourne’s population was as 35.6 years, compared to 42.3 years for the rest of Victoria.

Adults aged 20 to 49 years accounted for just under half (45 per cent) of the population living in Australia’s capital cities in 2019, the report said.

In Wyndham, there were more than 130,960 residents in this age bracket, as of June 2019.

ABS director of demography Lauren Ford said the higher concentration of younger adults living in capital cities could be seen in all states and territories.

“It was most evident in New South Wales and Victoria, with the proportions of people aged 20 to 49 years in Sydney and Melbourne more than 10 percentage points higher than in their regional areas,” Ms Ford said.
