A Tarneit resident has called for the speed limit to be lowered along a section of Leakes Road, and for safety barriers to be installed, after a car crashed through their fence last month.

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the car was travelling west on Leakes Road when it left the road, crossed a nature strip and footpath, did a 180-degree turn and crashed through the fence into the garden of their home, which is located at Wyndham Grange Retirement Village.

“As you can imagine, it was a very frightening experience,” the resident said.

“Luckily most school students are learning from home, it’s usually quite a busy footpath.

“It (the aftermath of the accident) could have been much worse.”

The resident said that since the accident, she has sent letters to VicRoads, Victoria Police and Wyndham council, asking for the speed limit along Leakes Road, between Morris Road and Derrimut Road, to be lowered to 60 kilometres per hour.

A petition signed by 37 people from the retirement home has also been sent to the council.

“We believe the speed limit of 80km/h is too high and the area needs safety barriers to prevent a recurrence or a fatality,” the resident said.

“It would be a good idea to do something before someone is seriously injured.”

The resident said the management of Wyndham Grange Retirement Village has installed temporary fencing for her garden since the accident and arranged for repairs.

A Department of Transport spokesperson said that “a recent upgrade of Leakes Road has created a safer and more reliable east-west route, and we’re committed to managing its ongoing safety and operation and will consider potential safety improvements where necessary”.
