Wyndham residents have been encouraged to join in next month’s Garage Sale Trail.

The annual event involves households, community groups, charities, businesses and schools across the nation.

The first Garage Sale Trail was held at Bondi Beach during 2010, in partnership with Waverley council, to encourage people to re-use unwanted items rather than throw them away.

Nowadays, the Garage Sale Trail involves more than 10,000 sales held in Australia across the weekend of October 21 and 22.

Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the council was proud to be part of more than 150 councils taking part in the Garage Sale Trail.

“It’s great that we’re able to bring this national initiative to our residents and help them think about how we can all take responsibility for the waste we create,” Cr Marcus said.

“The Garage Sale Trail is a fun way for people to declutter their houses, meet their neighbours and uncover some unique bargains.”

Cr Marcus said this year would mark the fourth anniversary of Wyndham taking part in the Garage Sale Trail.

Last year, the area hosted 120 sales – more than any other council in the state.

“More than 1800 residents took part, more than 17,000 items were up for sale and the average household in Wyndham made $246 in sales at last year’s event, which is a major achievement,” Cr Marcus said.
