Wyndham Art Gallery’s latest exhibition Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is now open to the public.

The REM exhibition has been guest curated by Timmah Ball and Raina Peterson, as part of Wyndham’s Midsumma festival program.

Midsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts program.

The REM art show features video works and creative pieces from a range of artists including Ruth Nyaruot Ruach, Naretha Williams, Manisha Anjali, Forest Vicky Kapo, Karen Casey, Devika Bilimoria and Dani Reynolds.

The free exhibition is about the concepts and thoughts that happen when humans close their eyes and someone’s subconscious takes over.

The exhibition explores the five different phases that brains move during sleep.

One of these is rapid eye movement (REM), when eyes move quickly in various directions. At this stage, most dreams occur.

The REM exhibition delves into the idea of how people imagine, and live through time, space and their bodies while asleep.

Wyndham’s creative city portfolio holder, councillor Marcel Mahfoud, said the council was proud to be hosting “this thought-provoking and progressive exhibition”.

“The Wyndham Art Gallery is open seven days a week – so in your waking hours make the time to visit the gallery and see the mesmerizing art works on display,” he said.

REM will be open until March 13 from 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays and 11am to 4pm Saturdays and Sundays.

The Wyndham Art Gallery is located within the Wyndham Cultural Centre at 177 Watton Street, Werribee. Visitors must obey COVID protocols.
