A group of women connected to the Wyndham Vale Cricket Club enjoyed a Ladies Day on the weekend.

Club secretary Melissa Urzia said about 40 people attended the event on Saturday, including the mothers of junior and senior players and partners of players.

Ms Urzia, who also organises social functions for the Wyndham Vale club, said she hoped the Ladies Day would become a regular event.

At the Ladies Day, attendees enjoyed sandwiches, grazing platters, sweets, fruit and drinks while being entertained by a singer and guitar player.

About 15 door prizes were also given out.

“It was nice to catch up with everyone, it has been very hard with lockdowns,” Ms Urzia said.

“Some people had not seen each other for a long time.”

Her partner, club president Tony Torcasio, gave a speech at the Ladies Day thanking the women for their support while their partners and sons devote six months of the year to cricket including for training sessions, meetings and game days – or sometimes 12 months, when winter cricket and preparing for next season comes into play.

“The Ladies Day is about giving back to us women because it seems we can sometimes be forgotten when it comes to men’s sport,” Ms Urzia said.

In addition being club secretary and organising social events, she also helps out by running the canteen and bar during competitions.
