Wyndham council is calling for nominations of individuals and clubs which have made a difference to girls’ and women’s sport, for a recognition program.

The Wyndham Champions of Girls’ and Women’s Sport recognition program has five categories: Young Up and Coming Performers; Inspirational People or Drivers of Change; Coaches, Umpires and Referees Who Are Role Models; Clubs and Organisations; and Elite Performers.

Nominees must have lived or trained in Wyndham, or be involved with a sports club in Wyndham, to be eligible.

Each nominee that meets the eligibility criteria will be recognised, with a certificate signed by Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan and Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard.

The nominees will also have their stories shared on the council’s website.

Cr Maynard said the Wyndham Champions of Girls’ and Women’s Sport recognition program would celebrate inspirational athletes, coaches, umpires and club members.

“Sport is a great way to have fun, keep in touch with friends and improve health and wellbeing, and by recognising those who have championed girls’ and women’s sport, and telling their stories, we want to inspire others to get involved in sport,” Cr Maynard said.

Applications will close on Sunday, August 30, with eligible applicants announced at an online event in September.
