Helping dads work it out

A new parenting program will focus on the health and wellbeing of Wyndham dads.

Fathers with children up to four years old can register for the Working Out Dads program, which kicks off at Eagle Stadium next month.

The weekly after-hours sessions aim to connect, support and strengthen the capacity of dads in the very early years of parenting.

Facilitator and fitness trainer Nathan Tarr said the goal was to help participants become less isolated and more supported and to promote healthy lifestyle choices during the transition to early parenting.

The program, run by Tweddle child and family health service and Wyndham council, covers parenting, relationships, mental health, fitness and wellbeing.

Tweddle chief executive Jacquie O’Brien said healthy dads are “vital to families”.

“Research confirms dads play a significant role in the social, cognitive, emotional and physical wellbeing of their children from infancy through to adult life,” Ms O’Brien said.

Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw, council’s Family Friendly City portfolio holder, said she was proud to support the initiative.

“Early intervention and prevention programs like Working Out Dads ensures that local fathers are healthy, both physically and mentally.”

The seven week program starts on Thursday, May 2 from 7-9pm.
