Help for homeless grows thanks to Whitelion

A year-long campaign that set out to raise cash and extend awareness of homelessness around Wyndham has hit its mark.

Whitelion Australia, in partnership with Let’s Feed, embarked on the fundraising drive at the beginning of 2016, and raised more than $16,000.

Whitelion program manager Charlotte Kelberg said the campaign kicked off after the organisation’s outreach and support programs in Wyndham reported growing demand for dedicated housing support for young people in the city.

“We wanted to raise awareness of this gap, as well as funds to support work in this space,” she said. “We believe that everyone deserves a home and a place where they feel safe and supported.”

Ms Kelberg said homelessness in Wyndham isn’t necessarily understood and is not as obvious as in other areas of the state.

There is a lack of understanding of the causes and consequences of homelessness, she said.

Let’s Feed founder Jasvinder Sidhu said his organisation had been founded with the aim of filling gaps in existing services by supporting organisations that are active in social work.

Let’s Feed and Whitelion, he said, will continue to work together closely on homelessness in the city, providing food and comfort to those in need.
