Festival of spirit

Werribee youngsters hope to spread peace, harmony and “spiritual vibes” at this weekend’s Wyndham Ganesh Festival.

Children aged between six and 12 years old hand made clay idols at a recent art workshop in preparation for the annual festival in honour of Lord Ganesha, the Indian god of new beginnings. Hoppers Crossing’s Arundhati Kalamkar-Mhalgi said she holds workshops to teach children about Indian tradition.

“The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha clay idols in homes or on elaborate temporary stages,” Ms Kalamkar-Mhalgi said.

“Since last year I have been holding Ganesh idol-making sessions for kids.

“Wyndham has a growing Indian community and there is a lot of excitement around the Ganesh festival held each year during September.”

The festival includes food stalls, dancing, exhibitions, entertainment and traditional sweets. The Wyndham Ganesh Festival is on September 7 between 4-5pm at Westgate Sport and Leisure Complex in Altona North.
