It’s time to throw on your runners and pound the pavement to be fit for a good cause.

Entries for the 2017 Wyndham Rotary Fun Run are now open, with proceeds to go towards Werribee Mercy Hospital’s critical care unit.

There are less than five months to prepare for the event, which will start from Chirnside Park and wind along the Werribee River trail on March 5 next year.

Runners will be spoilt for choices, with five-kilometre and 10-kilometre courses, plus a 1500-metre run for six to 10-year-olds, and a free 400-metre race for children under six.

For those looking for a more leisurely outing, there are also four-kilometre and eight-kilometre walking routes.

The fun run is one of Wyndham Rotary’s biggest fundraisers, collecting more than $80,000 for the Royal Children Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal over the past decade.

This time around, the club is hoping to raise $25,000, which will go towards intensive care beds, a defibrillator, an ECG, cardiac monitors and other equipment at Werribee Mercy’s critical care unit.

Adekunle Onipe from Wyndham Rotary said more than 1000 patients are transferred from the Werribee Mercy emergency department every year to other hospitals, due to Werribee Mercy’s inability to provide support services through a critical care unit.
