Council boost for youth jobs and training

Youth unemployment in Wyndham will be tackled under a council initiative to build jobs and education pathways.

Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the west had one of the state’s highest youth unemployment rates – and that was why the council would develop a Social and Economic Inclusion Framework to create practical initiatives.

“This project aims to improve economic and social cohesion for young people and their families in Wyndham who are experiencing disadvantage,” Cr Shaw said.

“Part of the plan includes the establishment of a social and economic inclusion taskforce to provide employment and education pathways for people facing barriers.”

Cr Shaw said the taskforce would help young people fill job positions and put them in contact with people who could assist with employment or training and education.

“We have a number of supporting organisations, including North Melbourne Football Club’s The Huddle, and Wyndham Community and Education Centre who are working to deliver specific programs for young people,” Cr Shaw said.

The Social and Economic Inclusion Framework will be developed thanks to a $1 million state government grant announced in August last year
