Community mutinies to replace park pirate ship

Point Cook residents are putting their money into a bid to create their own design to replace an iconic pirate ship playground that was destroyed by fire last September.

Wyndham council proposed replacing the wooden ship with a metal ghost ship at the top of the hill, with play equipment and a new slide at the bottom.

But residents launched an online crowdfunding campaign on Pozible.com, which has raised more than $1000 towards a redesign.

Tony Hooper, of the Point Cook Action Group, said that while the design the council proposed may be artistic, it was not practical.

“It’s art and the kids can’t play on it,” he said.

“We just want our ship back, using the old plans as a starting point, addressing any concerns and allowing the community to have their say and input into plans to make the ship better. We’re raising our hands for help.”
