Attempted carjackings prompt warning

Police are advising motorists to keep their car doors locked at all times after receiving reports of three attempted carjackings in Wyndham.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the first incident occurred on February 28 about 9.45pm.

“It is believed two women were in their vehicle, exiting a fast food drive-through, when a man approached the vehicle and attempted to open the passenger door,” she said.

The man did not gain entry to the vehicle and the victims drove away before reporting the matter to police.

The second incident occurred on March 2, also about 9.45pm.

“It is believed a woman was driving along Dohertys Road when a vehicle collided with her from behind,” the police spokeswoman said.

“The victim was then approached by two men who demanded she get out of the car. The victim drove off.”

The spokeswoman said police had also received a report that two men, aged in their 20s, were travelling in a vehicle along Sayers Road when they stopped at a set of traffic lights.

A group of five males surrounded the vehicle and began tapping on its windows and body before the men drove away.

The spokeswoman said the exact date of this offence was unknown, but police believe it occurred about 10pm.

She said police did not know whether the incidents were linked.

The unknown males involved in all three incidents were described as being of African appearance.

Wyndham police last week said offenders attempting to open vehicle doors while people were seated inside, was a crime trend they had identified.

Police said it was also occurring at traffic lights and carparks in areas around Derrimut Road and Heaths Road, Hoppers Crossing.

Police patrols have been increased at selected locations in response to the reports.
