Students at Point Cook College have crafted colourful wooden paddles called Hagoita, under a collaboration between the school’s Japanese and woodwork teachers.

The students used material including Paulownia wood to create the paddles, along with paint for decoration.

The paddles are used in the traditional pastime Hanetsuki, which is also known as Japanese badminton.

Hanetsuki is played at New Years in Japan and is believed to drive away evil spirits and act as a charm against evil.

Hundreds of years ago, Hagoita were regarded as good luck charms and even as a way to help protect against mosquito bites.
