Those looking to embrace local history in an action-packed way are invited to have a shot with the Werribee Half Battery (WHB).

In 1889 Andrew Chirnside of Werribee Park raised a half battery of horse artillery as a joint private-government initiative to help in the defence of Victoria.

In 2013 Allan and Maryanne Sterling brought the unit back to life and it has become one of Victoria’s most prominent military living history groups.

Every year, the Half Battery plays an integral role in important ceremonies such as the Werribee Anzac dawn service and performing the gunfire salute for Victoria Day in the city.

Whether sporting their ceremonial blues or their khaki field uniforms, there is plenty that the group can do.

The WHB an original 12-pounder cannons from the late 19th century and a number of small cannons as well.

Apart from ceremonial events, the group participates in marksmanship competitions with artillery and small arms, historic military encampments, engineering, late Victorian style military training and social events.

Membership is open to males and females over the age of 18 years and new members are most welcome.
