Parvovirus outbreak in the west prompts urgent warning

A breakout of the deadly parvovirus in the western suburbs has prompted a warning to pet owners.

The Australian Veterinary Association is urging cat-lovers like Chloe to get their pets vaccinated.

State president Dr Trish Stewart said more than 50 cases had been reported in the area during the past few months.

Calls came from suburbs including Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Laverton, Altona and Altona Meadows.

Symptoms include dehydration, fever, loss of appetite and vomiting.

Left untreated, it can be fatal within 24 hours. Dr Stewart said under-vaccinating and weather conditions could have led to the outbreak.
