Cafe culture a crafty idea for Fred and the ladies

Confirmed bachelor Fred Pierce is a hit with the ladies at a Werribee sewing circle, but at 94 he’s still a catch waiting to be landed.

Uncle Fred, as he’s known to the craft makers at the new Quilters Cafe, accompanies his niece and carer Bromwyn Small to weekly quilting sessions.

“It’s about companionship as much as sewing,” Mrs Small says.

Mr Pierce explains his single status simply: “I was always too fast for the girls to catch me, but I enjoy chatting to these girls”.

The Pyke Street cafe is the brainchild of Werribee sisters Lesley Ward and Jill Wilson.

“I love the atmosphere [of holding craft classes in a cafe]; it’s like entertaining at home,” Ms Wilson says.
