How do you solve a problem like Maria?

Star power came to Werribee Secondary College last week in the form of actress Amy Lehpamer, who’s playing Maria in The Sound of Music at the Regent Theatre.

Lehpamer, who has also played roles in Shane Warne – The Musical, Rock of Ages and the Sydney and Melbourne encore seasons of The Rocky Horror Show – told students about her career in theatre, and answered questions about stage fright, on-stage mishaps and the problem of learning lines.

“If you look at [the script] as a whole, you can never take it all in,” she told the students.

“Every scene should be broken up. The more you think of it as an exchange between two or three people, the more it will feel real.”

The school will host its first musical in 10 years this August after opening up a dedicated recital centre on campus earlier this year.

The musical, Back to the 80s, is based on the lives of high school students and features a range of classic ’80s hits.

About 55 students across all year levels will take part.
