The Hillier View: Ironic mistake

Kevin Hillier admits his mea culpa appears a bit moth-bitten

As Alanis Morissette sang in the Nineties, my column last week was “a little bit ironic”. There I was, expressing the virtues of admitting when you make a mistake and being accountable for it … and in the bottom paragraph of the column, I made a mistake.

While I stand by my comments regarding the giant moth statue and the others that adorn our city, I failed to check the date of the story, which goes back to 2013. That’s a pretty untidy piece of work on my behalf and I apologise to the readers of this column for my oversight. Lesson learnt. Just because it comes up on a social media feed doesn’t mean it’s new.

Hot property

We are constantly being reminded that we live in the fastest-growing area in the state of Victoria and one of the fastest in the entire country. It’s not something I see as a badge of honour, unless you can offer a lifestyle that has good facilities and infrastructure, which I don’t think we do. That’s another story.

It also means a very vibrant and competitive real estate market and a lot of new estates opening up. I have noticed recently that real estate agents have started to take credit for the swiftness of sales with many selling boards boasting things like Sold in One Day and I’m sure I saw one the other day which said Sold in One Hour.

As I walk the streets or drive around them, I have noticed that properties seem to put a For Sale sign up one day and it has a sold or ‘under contract’ poster on it very soon after. I’ve also noticed that real estate agents are being promoted like rock stars. Their faces are everywhere in papers, brochures, at bus stops, you name it. They are door-knocking (not my favourite activity) to tell you about recent sales. This annoys me! If I was in the market to buy or sell, I would have done something about it – it’s not like selling or buying a house is instigated by someone coming to your front door, unless of course that person is making you an offer you can’t refuse.

Housing affordability is a big issue and it looks like the west, and in particular the City of Wyndham, is hot property at the moment. ■
