40 years ago

October 8, 1975

Werribee Shire Council’s decision to cease its immunisation campaigns early next year has sent a shockwave of anger and disbelief throughout the district. The decision, not yet ratified, is part of an economy drive. Council is believed to have based its decision to abandon the immunisations on the fact that these doses can be given by the family doctor and the cost recouped through the Medibank scheme.

 

30 years ago

October 9, 1985

The nurses’ dispute hit the Werribee Hospital this week for the first time. A work-to-rule by nurses on the ratio of registered nurses to patients has forced the hospital to stop admission and cancel operations this week.

 

20 years ago

October 11, 1995

Wyndham Council has given the go-ahead for a new $5 million aquatic centre in Hoppers Crossing. The centre, expected to come into operation early in 1998 will have a 10-lane, 25-metre indoor swimming pool, a leisure pool, gymnasium and cafe. It will be developed on vacant land on Derrimut Road.

The family of a Hoppers Crossing motorist killed on Friday has started a fundraising drive to support his widow and three children. Bill Vehey died at the scene after his Honda CBR1000 was involved in a collision with a stolen Toyota utility.
