More space to educate

MAKING the move from an office tucked beside Werribee railway station to Heathdale’s Glen Orden wetlands, young people with disabilities are enjoying the open space after starting classes at Wyndham’s newest community centre.

CREATE youth education program team leader Jane Simms said Wyndham Community Centre would be home to accredited literacy and numeracy programs on Monday, art classes on Wednesday and fitness and art on Friday.

She said the new facilities, and the neighbouring ovals and parkland, meant a boost for the 40 young people with disabilities aged 18-24, like Melanie Lewindon and Rebecca Thrum (pictured), who are involved in Create’s programs. “It’s more room, more space and more options. We were stretched to the limit where we were in the Werribee business centre, but here, we’ve got land, gardening facilities and cricket nets.”

Access to open space and better facilities meant the group was not forced to travel to get to sports stadiums.

CREATE is also planning to shift more of its classes to the new location.
